The Delicious Way to Look and Feel Great
When it comes to eating, two goals are obvious; to get nutrients and energy. But do you know what you eat determines your mood as well?
Look at it this way. If you eat candy, immediately your blood sugar will spike, and you will feel energetic. However, within a short time, your energy levels will fall due to low blood sugar. If you are not wise, you will reach out for another candy, hence creating an addiction. On the other hand, if you took a tasty fruit instead of a sweet one, your blood sugar level will remain constant, and you will feel satisfied.
Basically, a healthy diet will raise your mood and increase your concentration. You cannot be happy unless you are healthy, and neither can you be healthy if you are always moody. Surprisingly, there is something you can do to attain both; eating well. Science has demonstrated that you are as healthy and as happy as the choice of food you take. Therefore, choosing the right diet is the key to happiness and health.
So, Is There a diet that can Guarantee Health and Happiness?
Although there is no magic food that can make you happy and healthy instantly, a habit of eating a well-balanced diet is the easiest way to control your mood and remain healthy. The following are basic tips that you can employ to rejuvenate your life!
Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are the keys to a healthy life. The sight of a delicious fresh fruit improves perception and mood, and within a short period of time, you will start feeling happy.
However, consuming one type of fruit or vegetable for a prolonged period of time has more negative effects on your body. It does not matter how nutritious or tasty a fruit or vegetable is, but if you consume it consecutively for days, your taste buds will literally “say no”.

Junk food is not only unhealthy but also increases blood sugar levels. Moreover, studies show that junk food causes hyperactivity in children. Therefore, the best way to ensure that your family is eating well is by consuming foods prepared at home. This also creates bonding during mealtimes, hence your family will be happy and healthy always!

The critical determinant of your weight is the food you eat and how active you are. If you eat well and exercise regularly, you will not only be healthy but also happy. People who are overweight are always moody, simply because of low self-esteem.
It does not matter how healthy your meal is. If you fail to exercise, the benefits will come to naught. It is, therefore, crucial to maintain a realistic workout regime and try to exercise every day, especially if you live a solitary life. However, for many, walking for 15 minutes to work every day is all that they need to keep fit.
Know the Foods to Avoid
Avoid, as much as you can, refined rice, wheat, and corn. Instead, choose to eat whole grains. Once the grains are refined, fiber and other nutrients are lost, and what is left is just starch. When you consume this starch, your blood sugar misbehaves, leading to mood swings. Another group of food to avoid is sugar-based foods and beverages. If you crave a sugary drink, you can blend fruit juices as an alternative to sodas, shakes, and artificial juices.
Increase in Protein intake
A generous portion of protein should be included in your meals. Proteins are known to decrease and slow the absorption of carbohydrates. This ensures that the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are increased in the blood. These two hormones are responsible for improving and maintaining a happy mood. Furthermore, a high-protein diet will aid you to lose weight. A lean body is a healthy body and will make you feel great.
Consume Vitamin-rich foods
It is a known fact that vitamins are critical to attaining a healthy body. Since vitamins are essential nutrients, they are needed in the body in “regular, but limited” amounts to aid the normal functions of the body. Notably, most of these nutrients are not synthesized in the body and must, therefore, be supplied through the diet.
Vitamins can be categorized into water-soluble vitamins & fat-soluble ones that are stored in the body.
Fat-soluble vitamins are always stored in our bodies. This means that our bodies will easily use them when needed. On the other hand, water-soluble vitamins can’t be stored in our bodies. You, therefore, need to replenish the body, on a regular basis, through diet.
So how does it affect your mood?
Vitamin D, which you can easily find in dairy products, is known to relieve mood disorders. Vitamin B-12, which you can get from broccoli and many leafy vegetables, is known to ease depression signs. If you eat food rich in these vitamins, you will not only remain healthy but also happy.
Include enough fiber in your meals
Your body uses sugar as fuel. However, it does not need all the fuel you consume at once. Sugar must be available to the cells slowly to ensure constant utilization. In order to achieve this, the food you eat must have fiber to prevent the fast release of sugar into the blood. Food rich in fiber includes beans, peas, and oats (known to promote the production of serotonin, which raises mood levels). Therefore, if you want to maintain health for happiness, consider adding fiber-rich food to your every meal.

It is always more joyful to have a meal together with your family than to eat alone at a restaurant. To ensure all your meals will boost your mood, you need to include enough protein, fiber, and vitamins in your diet, on a regular basis.

This was an interesting and different take on eating habits and how it affects one’s mental health. I never have related the foods I eat to the moods I may be experiencing, but it most certainly makes sense. The sweets and sugar phenomena are something I have dealt with for sure though.
A balanced diet with natural and whole grain cereals is very good for health, and now that I have read through your article I can see that there is a relationship between mood and diet. I have never been a fan of soft drinks or overly sweet desserts, and candy bars and the like neither.

Quite an informative post. Really worthy of unreserved commendations. It’s really important we take note of the kind of food we eat. A few days ago, I had to visit the doctor because of constipation, I had no idea that my fiber intake was very low. After discussing with the doctor, I realized that it’s been a long time since I ate fruit or beans and all that.
I had to start feeling discomfort to understand that I haven’t been eating healthy food. Needless to say, now I consume more fruits and I’ve added more beans and oat to my diet. I think everyone ought to take into consideration the type of food we consume.

Your article is indeed a pretty one. You cannot be healthy unless you are happy And you cannot be happy when you are not healthy. Of a truth, what we eat determines how we feel or our mood. No wonder when I eat foods or fruits and nuts that boosts libido, I will start having the urge for sex after a while. This automatically changes my mood.

Jack you did a very good job indeed. See almost all you wrote is true. There is a need for the combination of both diet and exercise for balancing your body harmony. But I beg to differ with you on feeling happy. Do you link happiness to the increase of glucose level in the body? For me, there is more to that. It is more a psychological and cognitive factor than a nutritional factor.
Jack Butler
Thank you, Paschal, for your heartfelt, and very much appreciated comments within our better health for today Blog, on the health for happiness post, as they area major foundation for my personal growth, and of this site’s growth as well. I truly appreciate and respect your thoughts on happiness, however, the point I was trying to make is when a person is overweight, or just not feeling good because of their current health condition, that many times is more often than not due to their lifestyle, they simply are not as happy as they can be if their health is in synch. I hope to hear from you soon, sincerely, Jack

Thank you, Jack, for an enlightening article. It’s true that candy causes a sugar spike but there is a way of using this productively with kids, who always seem to want candy (ours anyway). To just keep on saying no to kids who ask for it is no solution. Our kids are very active and attend athletics, fencing, tennis and ice skating on a regular basis. We treat them on a small candy before they start the lesson and it works wonders. They have more energy, and they do well in the class and it satisfies their desire for something sweet.
Not to be overdone, and not to replace the good advice in your article!
Jack Butler

Hi Jack. I greatly appreciate this post. And I fully agree with you. Eating healthy and having a balanced life stile has a direct impact on the way we feel.
, People who eat unhealthily are usually seeking for instant gratification. Not knowing that in the long run, that’s the worse they can do. Getting used to a healthy lifestyle could be compared to somebody that invests. That knows that our decisions today will directly affect our results tomorrow.
